ALFOSC Imaging ALFOSC Spectroscopy MOSCA NOTCam

Triggering the NOT

What do I do?

  1. If the object is visible, call immediately the observing room of the NOT telescope

  2. Use one of the following email templates to execute the observation and modify the
    bold printed tags:

    To: staff@not.iac.es, observer@not.iac.es, frb@dark-cosmology.dk

Subject: Activation of the ToO program (53-032) of D. Malesani for FRB ??????

    Email content:

    Dear NOT observer and staff.

This is a trigger of the FRB ToO programme (PI: Daniele Malesani).
    For further details, please see:

    http://www.not.iac.es/observing/too/P53/P53-032/

Please reply to frb@dark-cosmology.dk to acknowledge the reception
of this request. The target information and the observing strategy
    are reported below.

Please let us know if you carry out time-critical observations.

For any questions please do not hesitate to contact me on my mobile
    phone <***** insert your phone# *****>.

    Thank you for your collaboration,
<***** insert your name *****> (on behalf of the Nordic FRB team)

    ------------

The purpose of the observation is to obtain a spectrum of the afterglow of
FRB ??????. Please execute these observations as soon as
possible. [Please execute these observations around ?? UT when
the object becomes visible at the NOT.] [If the afterglow is bright
enough we may ask for a spectrum to be taken.]

A finding chart and a visibility plot are attached to this message.

    ------------

The object is localised to the following position:

    RA(J2000) = < ***** COORDINATE ***** >
    Dec(J2000) = < ***** COORDINATE ***** >
    Current uncertainty radius = < ***** ERROR RADIUS ***** >

We ask for an initial imaging observation followed by the spectroscopic
    observation

The commands to run the scripts are [TRIGGER PERSON: add
FRB name, coordinates, and delete the appropriate instrument
    command]
    :

    Go to ~obs/scripts/53-032

    And execute

    tcs.enter-object FRB?????? hh mm ss ±deg mm ss 2000 0 0 0

    ./too-alfosc-photometry.sh FRB?????? R,100,1

For more information on the various command options:

    http://www.not.iac.es/observing/too/P53/P53-032/photo_alfosc.html

If the afterglow is brighter than approximately R = 21 then please
obtain 3 x 1800 s spectra by executing the following commands
    [TRIGGER PERSON: add FRB name]:

    ./too-alfosc-spectroscopy.sh FRB?????? Grism_#4 Slit_1.3 60 1800 3

Note: to estimate if the afterglow is bright enough, please look
at the finding chart (link provided above) where magnitudes of a
few objects in the field-of-view are listed. We will of course also
inspect the images and assist in taking this decision.

Some further spectroscopy hints and tips can be found here:

    http://www.not.iac.es/observing/too/P53/P53-032/spect_alfosc.html

    ------------

For calibration we request [TRIGGER PERSON: edit accordingly]:

    Spectroscopy

    - Observation of a spectrophotometric standard star with the same setup
    close to the FRB position

[TRIGGER PERSON: modify GRISM and SLIT]:

    - 5 flat field images (./too-alfosc-spec-flat.sh GRISM SLIT 5)

    - 10 bias frames

Please ensure that all the calibration data are transferred to
our FTP account by activating remsave before the calibration data
    are obtained:

    rempath /data/service/calib
    remsave_on

When the calibration files have been acquired, please turn off remsave:

    remsave_off
